Zubarah

An ancient fort, and a museum. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2013 - situated just 100 km west of Doha lies the town of Al Zubarah, an important archaeological site famous for its old fort. This fort-turned-museum was constructed in 1938 during the reign of Sheikh Abdullah Bin Jassim Al-Thani and was erected on the ruins of a neighbouring fort. The fort itself is square-shaped with circular towers in three of its corners and a rectangular tower in the fourth. With high, thick walls, this fort also served as a coast-guard station and, until the mid-1980s, was used by the military. The nearby archaeological site of the town appears to be closed.

Umm Salal Mohammed

Someday we will visit Umm Salal Mohammed or begin to dream about going there! However, for now its not on our radar. Let us know in the comments if you think that should change!

Umm Salal Mohammed

Umm Salal Muhammad is a town in Qatar in the Umm Salal municipality, about 15 km north of Doha. An easy and pleasant morning or afternoon trip out of Doha, it is a short drive from the northern outskirts of Doha on the North Road to Al-Ruweis.

Umm Salal Muhammad is a small town in the center of the country and is different from most of the other urban developments in Qatar. The historic Barzan Towers are located in Umm Salal Muhammad. The towers date back to 1895 and its enclosed site was excavated by a Danish archaeological team in 1958.

The town is bordered by Umm Salal Ali to the north, and Al Kharaitiyat to the south. Qatar's capital, Doha, is relatively close, located 21 km to the south. Other distances include Al Khor – 23 km to the north, Al Wakrah – 22.4 km to the south, Zubarah – 52 km to the northwest, and Dukhan – 65.2 km to the west.
